Can they retain the status quo?
Ecuador is facing major challenges while inching closer to set a new shrimp export record. Ecuador boosted a 13 percent increase in global exports to 237 million pounds, led by higher shipments to China, the United States and Europe.

Ecuador boosted its farmed shrimp exports by 15 per cent to 2.01 billion pounds in the first nine months of this year, keeping the country on course for another record year. A combination of supply growth in Ecuador and wakening global demand has fueled a price collapsed in the global shrimp industry. Low shrimp prices over the last 12 months have led to many Indian producers switching over to alternative species such as freshwater shrimp and fish.

Ecuador’s shrimp industry suffered losses amounting to 1 billion dollars this year because of a collapse in wholesale prices in key world markets. The shrimp producers and processors of the country are also incurring additional whopping expenses due to the daily power cuts and energy rationing. The shrimp industry is spending around 80 million dollars annually for security costs against the rampages by criminal gangs in the country. In the face of all these challenges, collapse of key world market

prices, climatic threats, energy rationing and security costs, Ecuador is rising to the occasion to solidify its position as the leading shrimp producing nation. Ecuador’s strategies and resilience in retaining the status quo is keenly observed by the Global shrimp producers.
