The Global Shrimp Forum (GSF) that took place in Utrecht, The Netherlands, from 6-8 September 2023 discussed ongoing themes of relevance in the Shrimp industry. The re-emergence of black tiger shrimp farming was a main topic in focus, elaborating on the pros and cons of this new development. Blog Analyst Van der Pijl put forward his opinion that black tiger shrimp farming will bounce back strongly and sustainably this time around thanks to the SPF shrimp genetics and improvements in supply of domesticated, healthy and screened broodstock for the Multiplication centres operating in hatcheries in India, Indonesia, Vietnam and China.

Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) Senior Vice President Robins McIntosh observed that majority of farmers in Asia has resorted to black tiger shrimp farming. The SPF programme for black tiger shrimp pioneered by CPF and Moana Technologies has paved the way as torch bearers for the resurrection of black tiger shrimp farming Vaishnavi Aquatech a hatchery in India began importing domesticated black tiger broodstock from Moana for production in 2021. They have six hatcheries in operation and have successfully produced more than a billion post larvae. They have also embarked upon a brood stock multiplication centre in collaboration with the govt. This will prove to be the main hub for promoting the growth of black tiger shrimp farming in India in the near future according to Analyst Willem Van der Pijl.

The vannamei shrimp farmers who have burnt their pockets in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal with the increased costs of production and market price crash are all looking forward to this favourable turn of events with the re- emergence of black tiger shrimp farming.
