Brazil is positioned as the fourth largest producer of tilapia in the world and has tremendous potential for strong growth owing to its natural resources, excellent domestic consumption and adoption of new technologies.
The GenoMar Genetics Group, which supplies tilapia genetics through brands like GenoMar, Aquabel and AquaAmerica, is introducing the GenoMar line into the Brazilian market.
Alejandro Tola, CEO of GenoMar Genetics Group said “We are very proud of the commercial launch of GenoMar in Brazil. The arrival of this premium genetics on the Brazilian market represents the fulfilment of our promise to the industry and was only possible due to the competence and passion of our team,”
Selected groups of key customers and large tilapia producers in Brazil are shortlisted as these companies serve both domestic market as well as exports. They will initially focus on these large, vertically integrated tilapia producers
GenoMar 1000 is selected for fast growth, increase in productivity and to cut down the duration of the production cycle. The additional features are resistance to specific pathogens, robust growth and competitive
fillet yield.
The fish grew from approximately 20 to 1,000 grams in 114 days in cages, and 121 days in ponds in the pre-launch commercial trials conducted in Brazil GenoMar’s fish groups were uniform in sizes with higher survival rates in cages.
The fish pathogen, Streptocccus agalactiae was detected at the cage site during the experiment. The increase in tolerance to this infection was attributed to the selection for Streptococcosis resistance done over generations on the GenoMar fish,” the
company adds.
GenoMar’s genetic programme has adapted to serve the global tilapia industry with their portfolio of lines and products. The company is launching the first product, called GenoMar 1000 after a close analysis of Brazilian market. GenoMar can now deliver a fast-growing strain of tilapia to customers in Brazil, a successful contribution to the booming Brazilian market especially from March 2024 onwards.
