• Mark 10-20 sampling spots in a Z-shape pattern, depending on the size of the pond.

• For EHP testing by RT-PCR, collect samples from sludge or faecal matter zones.

• Use a clean, sterilized soil collection auger , a ½-inch diameter sharpened anchor or a spud.

• Use the auger to remove a 0-6 inch slice of soil from each spot.

• Place the soil samples in a clean bucket.

• Pour the soil from the bucket onto a clean piece of paper or cloth and mix thoroughly.

• Spread the soil evenly and divide it into 4 quarters.

• Reject two opposite quarters and mix the remaining soil again.

• Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you have about half a kilogram of soil left.

• Place the soil in a clean cloth bag and label it clearly.

• Place the sample bag in an appropriate labelled container and ensure that the lid is tightly sealed.

• Deliver the sample to the laboratory as soon as possible
